Network Management

How to load balance multiple WAN-ISP links

Description
Load Balancing is a foremost feature required in any of the organization network. Managing multiple links to increase the availability of internet in LAN network is what a load balancer does.

NetXGATE offers load balancing in two different modes –.
Failover Only : If there are multiple WAN interfaces configured in the device, the WAN interface with higher link Priority / weightage takes higher priority and acts as the primary interface . In Failover Mode, One of the link acts as primary link & serves all the traffic. Once the primary link is down, backup link starts serving the complete traffic. Means, In case of primary interface failure, secondary interface shall take over and provides the access. This is referred as failover mode of operation..
Fail Over / Load balance: All of the links will serve the traffic but in their defined respective Link Priority /weightage under WAN Link properties of that WAN Interface .Means If there are multiple links configured and network traffic is distributed among the configured links. The traffic distribution on each link depends on the respective link weightage configured..
This configuration can be enabled if the dual or multiple ISPs are configured in the network.

Option -1 .

If selected Failover only, then you can choose Any One link as primary for serving all the traffic. In case any of the primary goes down, backup line would start serving traffic. For example, if there are three lines –WAN1, WAN2 and WAN3. If WAN1 (default) chosen as primary and if it goes down then WAN2 would start serving traffic . If both goes down then WAN3 would start serving traffic.

Option -2 .

If selected Fail Over / Load balance, then define the Link Priority /weight-age in which you want the traffic to be distributed among the lines. ( That you can configure Under Configuration > network Setting > WAN > Link properties .
For example, If Link priority of WAN1 is 1 and WAN2 as 4 . It means traffic distribute in 1:4 . In other word 20% of the traffic would go through line WAN1 and 80% of the traffic would go through WAN2. Similarly, 1:2:2 means 20% of the traffic would go through link WAN1, 40% each through the link WAN2 and WAN3.
In case of any link failure, traffic shall be distributed among the other links. However, in this configuration, routing policies can be defined to route specific connection requests through other configured links. Note- NetXGATE having option to exclude particular WAN Link from member of Load balance by disabling the Load balance Membership option under its Link Properties Field.
Note - Take ref of PIC-2 for GUI config .

Steps to be followed:

1: Login to NetXGATE NG Dashboard as an administrator with read and write permission .
2: Go to Configuration,Navigate to Routing /Load Balancing .
3: Select WAN link Load balance, New window will Open.
4: Under Load balance properties , < Here select the mode in which you want to configure multiple links > - Select Failover only or Load Balance / Failover according to requirement under WAN Link balancing Method.

5: In Scan Interval provide the Frequency in seconds for which the status of the interface shall be monitored., Suggested: 10 Seconds .Default Value : 60Sec.
6: In Re-scan Delayto confirm Link Down provide the time in seconds to re-scan before declaring link down status. Suggested: 3 Seconds. (Selectable options: Disable, 1….5).
7: In Allowed Packet Loss select the allowed packet loss in % exceeding which the associated link status is declared as down. Suggested: 80% .Default value: 80%.
8: In Allowed Round Trip Latency provide the round trip delay in milliseconds exceeding which the associated link status is declared as down. If the value is “0” in this field, round trip delay shall be ignored. Suggested: 0 - Ignore .(Default: 0 - Ignore).
9: Once set the Mode and value, Click Save and Restart service.
